Invariably there would be some New-bee who would notice how incompetent and unqualified and downright imbecilic those at the "top" were. They would question and ask "Why is so-and-so in the position they're in?"
We had a standard answer that I assume was handed down over the decades by ones who knew -
"Because somewhere there's somebody who has polaroids of someone fucking a goat."
